Papaya Island is a fictional location in the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama. It's main importance in the metaseries is that it is the location of the Tenkaichi Budokai, or World Tournament in the English FUNimation dub. Goku first participated in the World Tournament during the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, and whenever the arena was wrecked, it was usually done by a fighter who had Goku as their opponent: Tien wrecks the stage with his Tri-Beam Cannon move, and Piccolo ruins it with his increased size. Although there seem to be major threats occurring in the tournament, they still seem to be hosted. The name for the island is named after the tropical fruit, the papaya. (This is probably another one of Akira Toriyama's fruit puns.)

The tournament ring was eventually destroyed by Piccolo's Hyper Explosive Demon Wave attack and wasn't rebuilt until after the Cell Games.
